Deputy Charged With DUI After Speeding Has Resigned: Sheriff
Former patrol deputy John Girgis resigned from the Manatee County Sheriff's Office after being charged with a DUI early Thursday.
MANATEE COUNTY, FL — A deputy with the Manatee County Sheriff’s Office was charged with DUI after being caught speeding early Thursday morning, MCSO said in a news release.
Around 3 a.m., a deputy noticed a vehicle speeding on State Road 70 and having trouble maintaining its lane. When the vehicle stopped at a red light at Lockwood Ridge Road, the deputy approached it.
The driver, John Gurgis, had bloodshot eyes and admitted to drinking alcohol, the sheriff’s office said. Gurgis was identified as an MCSO patrol deputy.

After determining he was driving while intoxicated, he was arrested and charged with a DUI, the sheriff’s office said. He was brought to Manatee County Jail.

The 25-year-old was hired as a deputy in July of 2018. Girgis resigned from the MCSO Thursday morning, prior to being terminated, the sheriff’s office said.
