19 Arrests in Sobriety Checkpoint Near Clearwater High

Authorities issued charges for DUI, possession of substances including crystal meth, prescription pain pills and marijuana as part of a sobriety checkpoint near Clearwater High School late Friday and early Saturday.

Authorities arrested 19 people near Clearwater High School late Friday to early Saturday.

They issued 27 citations, impounded 12 vehicles, and charged 8 drivers with DUIs. Authorities also issued a handful of possession charges for substances including crystal meth, alprazolam and marijuana. 

Pinellas County deputies and Clearwater Police worked together in the weekend sobriety checkpoint in an effort to catch drivers impaired by alcohol and drugs.

The following are the complete results of the sobriety checkpoint:

  • 8 DUIs
  • 5 Driving while license is suspended or revoked
  • 2 No valid driver's license
  • 1 Possession of alprazolam
  • 4 Possession of marijuana
  • 1 Possession of vyvanse
  • 1 Possession without prescription
  • 1 Violation of a driver's license restriction
  • 1 Providing a false name to a law enforcement officer 
  • 1 Possession of crystal meth
  • 1 Refusal to obey lawful command
  • 1 Felony violation of probation warrant
  • 1 Possession of drug paraphernalia

This month's checkpoint was dedicated to Steven Thillard, who died in a 2006 crash. The sheriff's office conducts sobriety checks monthly at locations around Pinellas.
