Clearwater Man Steals Car, Causes DUI Crash: Police

The collision early Monday left another driver in critical condition and led to a street closure, say Clearwater police.

CLEARWATER, FL — The Clearwater police closed down a street for several hours Monday morning following a collision involving a stolen car, and the driver is facing charges that include DUI and driving with a suspended license. The collision left the other driver in critical condition in a local hospital, the police said.

The driver of the stolen car has been identified as Corey A. Feldman, 28, of Clearwater, the Tampa Tribune reported.

The police say that in the early hours of Monday, Feldman stole the Mercedes of an acquaintance at the Speedway gas station at Court and Chestnut streets before speeding east on Court Street.

He then crashed into the rear of a BMW moving in the same direction on Court, leaving the driver in critical condition and injuring a passenger, the police said.

The unidentified male BMW driver and the female passenger were taken to Bayfront Health St. Petersburg, the Tampa Tribune reported. The police closed down Court Street from Highland to Hillcrest avenues until 8 a.m., according to the newspaper.

The police said Feldman will be charged with grand theft auto, driving under the influence (DUI) with serious bodily injury, leaving the scene of a crash involving serious bodily injury, careless driving and driving with a suspended license.
