Can Christmas Trees are springing up all over Dunedin

A tradition started two years ago of making a Christmas tree sculpture assembled with some 950 cans of non-perishable food. It was on display in the Dunedin Library during the month of December.

The sculpture was created by volunteers of Dunedin Cares with the hope that it would continue to make people aware that there are still so many in our community that need our help.

Making people aware of the need for food Mr. Dan Robison, manager of Walmart Neighborhood Market on Main Street in Dunedin, was so impressed by the sculpture that he decided to have one assembled in the store. The Christmas Tree was constructed using 1,100 can of non-perishable food. Thanks to Dan a simply beautiful partnership rooted in the strongest foundation was formed – “a commitment to serve others” said Ed Hughes, President of Dunedin Cares.

The tree was only standing for about two weeks when a gentleman came into the Walmart store, purchased the entire tree and donated the food back to Dunedin Cares.

He wishes to remain anonymous but his hope is that others may find the love in their hearts and show those who may be down on their luck that they are not forgotten. Christmas miracles really do happen in Dunedin.

One miracle seems to create another miracle – for within a week another generous individual purchased the tree in the library and donated it back to Dunedin Cares food pantry. “Evidence of love is found in seeing a need in others, then doing all we can to correct it.” said Joe Mackin, Vice President of Dunedin Cares.

The Board of Directors would like to let those who donate to the food pantry know how meaningful their contributions are to those who are in need. The food pantry gives the many in need a great peace of mind in knowing that they do not have to worry about having enough food to feed themselves and their family.

We are so grateful for the love, understanding and support we have been blessed with from this wonderful community family.
