Florida Announces Spiny Lobster Season Dates

Lobster fans look forward to this time of year. Here's what's to know about Florida's 2013-2014 Spiny lobster season.

Florida's popular Spiny Lobster season opens soon. 

The Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission announced the following dates for the 2013-2014 season:

  • July 24 and 25, 2013: Two-day Spiny lobster recreational season
  • Aug. 6, 2013 to March 31, 2014: Regular commercial and recreational lobster season.
Some other things you should know about Spiny lobster season:
  • Spiny lobsters must have a carapace length greater than 3 inches to be taken during the open season. 
  • During the two-day Spiny lobster season, recreational divers and snorkelers can take up to six lobsters a person per day in Monroe County and Biscayne National Park waters and 12 lobsters a person, per day in other Florida waters.
  • Divers must possess a measuring device and lobsters must be in the water while they are measured.
  • Harvesting of egg-beating females is prohibited.
