It's Walk-to-School Day in Dunedin!

Students all over Dunedin are walking or biking to school Wednesday morning in honor of an international annual "Walk-to-School Day."

This is the first year officials have opened the day up to bicycling students.

The annual event is meant to promote health and fitness, pedestrian and bicyclist safety, and awareness of directions, street signs and traffic patterns, according to the Pinellas County Sheriff's Office.  

Four Dunedin elementary schools are joining 19 others in Pinellas County Wednesday. Deputies, school staff, administrators and community representatives are assigned to each participating location. Parents are also welcome.

Here's a look at Dunedin's assignments:

Dunedin Elementary School

• Meet: Dunedin Library, 233 Douglas Ave., at 7:15 a.m.
• Start walk: 8 a.m.
• Arrival at school 8:20 to 8:30 a.m.
• (Open court at 8:35 a.m.)
• Dunedin Fire Department staff:  Jeffrey Parks, fire chief
• City VIP: Dave Eggers, mayor

• Meet in grassy median at San Jose Drive at 7:45 a.m.
• Walk to school: 8 a.m.
• Arrival at school: 8:15 a.m.
• Dunedin Fire Department staff: Kelly Intzes, deputy fire marshal with Sparky the Fire Dog (Hal Bovie, inspector) making a special appearance.

• Meet in Dunedin Blue Jays parking lot, 373 Douglas Ave., at 7:20 a.m.
• Start walk: 7:40 a.m.
• Arrival at school: 8 a.m.
• Dunedin Fire Department staff: Dora Pearl, fire inspector
• City VIP: Ron Barnette, commissioner

• Meet at Vanech Park, 3501 Garrison Rd., at 7:45 a.m.
• Start walk: 8:10 a.m.
• Arrive at school: 8:20 a.m. in open court back side of school
• Dunedin Fire Department staff: William "Trip" Barrs, deputy chief
• City VIP: Julie Ward Bujalski, vice mayor
