Here are the top five stories today in Dunedin:

  1. Registration for Dunedin's Before & After School Programs opens on July 20 for kids in pre-K through fifth grade enrolled at Dunedin Elementary School, Garrison Jones Elementary School or San Jose Elementary School. The Before Care program is offered between 7:30 a.m. and the start of school and the After Care program is offered after school until 6 p.m. Initial registration must be done in person at the Dunedin Community Center. The program is offered on all school days, except for school in-service days and holidays. (Dunedin Patch)
  2. Dunedin Showcase Kids Theater presents a performance of The Adventures of Tom Sawyer this weekend on July 9 and July 10 at 3 p.m. The Kids Division offers drama productions twice per year in the Dunedin Community Center for audiences of all ages to enjoy. Tickets are just $8 and can be purchased at the door. (Dunedin Gov)
  3. Launched by the Juvenile Welfare Board and their partners, Early Readers, Future Leaders: Pinellas Campaign for Grade-Level Reading is a local program that works to improve reading levels among children before they reach third grade. Part of the program is the Summer Book Bus, which is currently on the road with plans to make dozens of stops at sites across Pinellas County, giving away free books to kids at each destination. The bus will be visiting the Dunedin Public Library on Wednesday, July 13 at 11 a.m. Bring the kids down to pick out a new book to take home! If you can't make it to this event, check out the Summer Book Bus schedule for other dates and times throughout the summer. (JWB Pinellas | Summer Book Bus Schedule)
  4. We may see Dunedin transition into a sustainable community in the future! The city established Future Land Use policies in its "Strive for 2035 Comprehensive Plan" which outlines a vision of Smart Growth. According to the city's website, "the goal for Smart Growth is to provide a sustainable community that enhances the quality of life, protects natural resources, and provides an efficient land development pattern to mitigate the adverse impact of population growth." The plan lists ten Smart Growth Principles, including mixed land use, compact building design, walkable neighborhoods, preserved open space, and a variety of transportation options. Read more about what Dunedin's future will hold on the city's website. (Dunedin Gov)
  5. The Dunedin Falcons are looking at several challenges in the upcoming football season. Former starting quarterback, Parker Stirnkorb, transferred to Zephyrhills Christian Academy requiring some adjustments for the fall. Coach Mitch Disney has named senior Chris Bostick as the team?s new starting quarterback who will be supported by running backs Noble Wilder, Isaac Oster, and Rich Burges. Additionally, redistricting will put Dunedin up against Class 3A state runner-up Berkeley Prep, Clearwater High School, and Calvary Christian, each of who reached the playoffs in 2021. According to Disney, "They know we have our work cut out for us but they have attacked this with a great attitude." (SBLive)

Are you a Dunedin resident looking for an investment alternative to the stock market?

Bloomberg recently asked experts where they?d invest $100,000 right now, and many of them had the same answer: fine art.

Thinking you can?t afford a Picasso? Well in 2012, Congress passed the JOBS Act, which allowed for the securitization of artwork. A company called Masterworks.io built the largest platform for buying and selling art securities. In the past, you could only buy shares of companies like Apple, but with this investing app, you can unlock this powerful investment.

Meaning, you can invest in shares of million-dollar artwork. And in uncertain times, it turns out, fine art may be a wise investment. Here?s why:

  • Low correlation to stocks according to Citi
  • Contemporary art historically returns 23.2% when inflation is >3%
  • Contemporary art prices outpaced the S&P 500 by 164% (1995-2021)

To learn more, visit Masterworks.io, where Dunedin Daily readers can skip the waitlist.

He also followed up on a previous article he wrote on congestion along the Pinellas Trail in downtown Dunedin. (TBN Weekly)
  • Robotic umpires using Automated Balls and Strikes (ABS) technology are being tested in minor league stadiums in the Tampa Bay area. Umpires are fed calls from the device into an earpiece, which they then relay to the crowd. "It's kind of cool that we're the first people to experience it," said Dunedin Blue Jays pitcher Matt Svanson. "They [MLB] survey us after the year to see how we like it, so our opinions do matter on how it will be implemented in the game eventually." ABS technology may be used in the major leagues as soon as 2024. (Fox13)
