New Steeple Goes Up At Faith Lutheran Church

A new steeple is raised at Faith Lutheran Church early Thursday morning.

It was a long time coming, but Faith Lutheran Church finally got to raise its new steeple early Thursday with a handful of people in attendance.

The steeple is made of fiber glass and wood, and can withstand up to 150 mph winds, Paul Martin, the congregation's vice president, said as he waited for a crane truck to lift the steeple onto the church roof around 7:30 a.m. July 11.

The steeple also has blue crosses cut out on the sides for back-lighting at night, he said. It cost about $7,500 to construct and a donor helped cover the expense for installation.

The new steeple replaces a 1960s-era spire made of corrugated steel, which had to be taken down a few years ago during roof renovations because it was not up to code.

The modest church at 1620 Pinehurst Road, with about 150 congregates, set about renovating its chapel a few years ago.

The steeple took several years to fund and its installation was delayed by a couple weeks.
