Crime Follow-Up: No Arrests in Tarpon Woods Attack

Pinellas County Sheriff's Office Spokeswoman Cecilia Barreda said on Tuesday that there have been a few leads in the case.

Pinellas County Sheriff's detectives are continuing to look for a man who attacked a female runner near her Tarpon Woods home more than nine months ago.

The 49-year-old woman, whose identity was not released, was walking to her home on Brian Road South at about 8:30 p.m. after finishing a 10-mile run on Sept. 26, 2012.

"He walked up behind her, put her in a chokehold, took her to the ground and groped her breasts," said Pinellas County Sheriff Bob Gualtieri at a news conference in the days after the attack.

Gualtieri, who lives in the same subdivision, said the incident was serious because of the sexual overtones and described it as an isolated crime.

"She was by herself, it's a very safe neighborhood, it's all residential, it's well lit, she was near her house, it's just one of those things. I don't know what else she could have done, or anything she could have done to prevent it," Gualtieri said.

A composite drawing of the suspect was released. Detectives thought the suspect may have left in a vehicle or may have gone to a home in the subdivision because deputy K-9s could only track the suspect's scent for a short distance.

Pinellas County Sheriff's Office Spokeswoman Cecilia Barreda said on Tuesday that there have been a few leads in the case.

"No arrests have been made. Nothing has led us to a suspect," she said. "There's nothing really new on the case at this time."

The sheriff's office released the following description of the suspect shortly after the attack.

Suspect Description-

  • 22-years-old
  • 5-foot-10
  • 140 pounds
  • Light brown, curly hair that was just below his ears
  • The suspect was wearing long, light-grey cargo shorts, no shirt and black tennis shoes without socks.
Barreda said on Tuesday, if anyone has information that can help detectives, please call Pinellas County Sheriff's Detective Jeff Capra at 727-582-6200.

"If they have something they can bring us, that would be great," she said.
