A very special delivery is in the works that will bring 20 dogs to Palm Harbor to start new lives.

The Suncoast Animal League is teaming up with South Carolina-based Pilots N Paws for the 4th annual  "Dog is my Copilot Rescue Flyway 2012"  scheduled for Sept. 28-29.

It's expected to be the largest event in the history of Pilots N Paws, according to the organization's website. Suncoast Animal League Executive Director Rick Chaboudy says more than 80 volunteer pilots are scheduled to fly about 300 dogs to various rescue groups around the country over the weekend. For many of the dogs, it will be a life-saving plane ride.

The 20 dogs are scheduled to be flown to Tampa Saturday. Chaboudy and the team at Suncoast Animal League will pick the dogs up at the airport, then drive them to Fairway Pizza in Palm Harbor where a receiving area will be set up so the dogs can be examined, micro-chipped and bathed, if needed.

Chaboudy says the dogs will be available for adoption and placed in foster homes beginning Saturday. A tentative time for the adoption event has been set for 3 to 7 p.m., however that is subject to change, since details about the pilots' flight schedules have not been finalized. Palm Harbor Patch will keep you updated about the adoption event.
