Tarpon Woods Golf Tournament to Benefit 50 Legs Prosthetics Charity
The money raised at Saturday's golf tournament will benefit the charity 50 Legs which is helping victims of two recent tragedies; the Boston bombings and Palm Harbor's Ireland Nugent.
Here's a cool way you can have some fun this weekend while also helping victims of the recent Boston bombings and Palm Harbor's own Ireland Nugent.
The charity 50 Legs will be hosting its second-annual golf tournament at East Lake's Tarpon Woods Golf Club this Saturday.Â
50 Legs is a Largo-based nonprofit that provides prosthetics to children in need. It was founded by former wrestler Steve Chamberland, an amputee who lost a leg in a motorcycle accident. Chamberland started the charity in 2011 after he was contacted by a friend who knew of a 9-year-old girl in need of a prosthetic leg. The girl was injured when she saved her sister's life by pushing her from the path of a truck headed their way.Â

"When I heard this story, I realized that my leg was taken for a reason and that I would devote myself to helping other children amputees," said Chamberland on his 50 Legs website. Chamberland contacted his prosthetic doctor and together they presented the girl with a prosthetic leg.

Chamberland returned home from his hometown of Boston Tuesday night, after meeting five victims of last week's bombings who lost limbs in the attack.
"It's very close to his heart because that's his hometown," said 50 Legs board member John Thompson
Chamberland was accompanied to Boston by Army veteran Tanner Kuth, who lost a leg while serving in Afghanistan.
"Tanner and Steve are two of the most active guys in the world and they'll show them they can have a very high quality of life," said Thompson.
50 Legs is also helping 2-year-old Ireland Nugent, of Palm Harbor, whose ankles were severed in a freak lawn mower accident.
"The local community outreach and support has been amazing," said Thompson of the inquiries and donations 50 Legs has received after the tragic accident.
The Tarpon Woods Golf Club will donate Saturday's golf registration fees and tournament sponsorship fees to 50 Legs. People will also be able to participate in an auction after the golf tournament.
