Volunteer Puppy Raiser Help Someone Else Gain Independence

Turns a Promising Puppy into a Potential Assistance Dog

Ingle
Ingle (Canine Companions for Independence )

Ingle recently arrived at the Fort Myers home of Susan Brunke as an eight-week-old yellow ball of fur with lots of potential, but in need of help to shape him into a trustworthy assistance dog. Once Ingle is turned back into the Southeast Region of Canine Companions for Independence (Canine Companions) in Orlando for additional professional training, Brunke will have taught him 30 commands and she will have provided basic obedience instruction.

Wearing his special yellow cape proudly, Ingle will be seen around Fort Myers for the next 16 months. As a volunteer puppy raiser for Canine Companions, Brunke will take Ingle to many places, allowing him to socialize with strangers, walk amid crowds and traffic, and otherwise become familiar with the world around him. Puppy raisers also provide a safe home and give lots of love.

Canine Companions has its own breeding program in Santa Rosa, California and the volunteer puppy raising program offers a unique opportunity for volunteers to assist Canine Companions with its mission. Canine Companions assistance dogs are provided free of charge, though costs exceed $50,000 to breed, raise, train and provide ongoing support. Charitable contributions, grants, special events and corporate support fund the substantial costs involved with this process.
