Dr. Mike Bauer for Gulfport Ward 2 City Council

Statement regarding recent news and comments on racism and electoral politics

Gulfport City Council Ward 2 candidate Mike Bauer is deeply troubled by recent national news reports highlighting racist beliefs still entrenched in far too many communities across America. Unfortunately, this includes our City of Gulfport, Florida.

Additionally, attempts made at the close of the Gulfport City Council meeting on Tuesday, February 2nd to call this a less than honorable political issue rather than a moral one serve to underscore the challenge those fighting racism are battling. While we want to make clear Mike Bauer is not the individual discussed by name at the City Council meeting and did not partake in any negative campaigning, as he agrees negative campaigning does not reflect well on anyone involved in community service, for public officials to use their official city platform to make accusations against one individual and try to equate electoral politics with centuries of racism in America without condemning in the strongest possible terms the underlying issue reflects poorly both on the individual and the entire Council.

While far too common and certainly not equivalent, everything about the news and reaction Tuesday has been deeply unfortunate. Mike regrets having to respond in this way, however it is imperative that the community and the voters hear from candidates and their elected officials about their position on politics and racism.

To be clear and explicit, racism and racist violent language have no place in our City and Mike will do everything in his power whether or not he is elected to Gulfport City Council to promote and advance equity and racial justice in our community.
