Fatal Hit-And-Run In Gulfport Claims St. Pete Man’s Life

A Wednesday night pedestrian crash in Gulfport resulted in the death of a 41-year-old St. Pete man.

GULFPORT, FL — The Pinellas County Sheriff’s Office is investigating a Wednesday night hit-and-run crash in Gulfport that left a 41-year-old St. Petersburg man dead.

According to the agency, Frankie McCray was walking eastbound, crossing 49th Street South around 10:20 p.m. Dec. 21. McCray was in a marked crosswalk at the intersection of 11th Avenue South when an unknown vehicle that was heading south on 49th Street South hit him.

The driver of the vehicle struck McCray and kept on going, an email from the sheriff’s office said.

McCray was struck by a second vehicle shortly after the first. Deputies say Martin Thomas, 24, of St. Petersburg was also heading south on 49th street in a 2012 Dodge Avenger. Thomas “was unable to stop before striking McCray who was lying in the roadway,” the email said. “Thomas stopped his vehicle at the scene.”

McCray was pronounced dead at the scene.

Investigators are now looking for the first driver involved in the crash. The vehicle is believed to be black in color and is possibly a truck.
