GULFPORT, FL — Gulfport will host a full day of Fourth of July activities starting with a fishing derby in the morning and concluding with a fireworks display.

With a 50/50 chance of rain and the unpredictability of weather in Florida in July, to be on the safe side, you'd better bring an umbrella if you're heading out to celebrate. Patch will provide update on any severe thunderstorms and event cancellations.

Wake up early and bring the kids to the Gulfport Marina’s Fishing Derby at the Michael J. Yakes Recreation Complex’s, 5730 Shore Blvd. S., from 8 to 11 a.m. Free registration is on the seawall starting at 7:30 a.m. the day of the event. Bring your own fishing pole. The marina’s staff will provide bait and prizes.

The free Family Sand Sculpture Contest sponsored by the Gulfport Recreation Division will take place from 10 a.m. to noon on Gulfport’s Municipal Beach. The theme is “Red, White & Blue." Registration begins at 9:30 a.m. Bring your own tools and supplies.

Gulfport will continue its long tradition, hosting the City of Gulfport Independence Day Parade at 6 p.m. The best viewing spot is directly in front of the Gulfport Casino Ballroom on the sidewalk.

Immediately following the parade, the Gulfport Special Events Trolley will loop the city’s offsite parking locations until 10 p.m. to take celebrants to and from the celebration and fireworks display on Gulfport Beach. If you see the trolley, just give the driver a wave.

The New Horizon’s Band of Gulfport will perform on the Casino Pad at 7:30 p.m. and the fireworks display will begin at 9 p.m.
