Preparing For Hurricane Dorian

  • Sandbags are available at the 49th Street Neighborhood Center, 1617 49th St. S., from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. through Sunday or until inclement weather begins. There is a 10-bag limit and proof of residency may be required.
  • Register for special needs shelters by calling the Citizens Information Center at 727-464-4333.
  • Purchase necessary items to complete your stay/go kits now. Keep your neighbors in mind while at the store and at the pump. Purchase only what you and your family need.
  • The Florida Department of Health in Pinellas County urges residents to refill their prescription medications. It is not known how the hurricane will impact the region, but it’s important to make sure required prescription medication is available.
  • Clear your yard and patio of debris or loose items that could become projectiles in high winds. Such items should be secured or placed in a protected building or structure.
  • Any resident who previously experienced flooding in their area should prepare for the risk of flooding. But remember: anywhere it rains, it can flood.
  • Locate your evacuation zone.
  • Mobile and manufactured homes residents must prepare to evacuate when an evacuation is ordered. Mobile homes, manufactured homes and recreational vehicles are not sturdy enough to withstand the strong winds of a hurricane.
  • Finalize preparedness plans.
