Tropical Storm Watch In Effect For Polk, Highlands Counties
A tropical storm watch is now in effect for Highland and Polk counties as Hurricane Dorian continues to move slowly west.

POLK COUNTY, FL — A tropical storm watch is now in effect for Highlands and Polk counties as Hurricane Dorian continues to move slowly west through the northern Bahamas.
At this time, the primary concern is for tropical storm-force winds over Highlands County and eastern portions of Polk County, said the National Weather Service.
Hurricane Dorian is current about 210 miles east of Sebring and 235 miles east of Winter Haven, moving at 1 mph with 165 mph winds.

The hurricane is forecast to turn north just off the Florida east coast by early Tuesday.
Residents in Highlands and Polk counties should prepare for dangerous wind causing damage to roofing and siding materials, along with damage to porches, awnings, carports and sheds.

Unsecured, lightweight objects may become dangerous projectiles and large trees may snap or uproot.
Residents should also prepare for locally hazardous rainfall flooding, which may prompt a few evacuations. Rivers and tributaries may quickly rise with swifter currents. Small streams, creeks, canals and ditches may become swollen and overflow in spots. There may be some brief road and bridge closures.
Elsewhere across West Central and Southwest Florida, little to no impact is anticipated.
