Winter Haven Wolverines youth football 2017

The Winter Haven Wolverines youth football program kicked off their 2017 season with the Jamboree on Saturday August 5, 2017. Jamborees were held at numerous locations within the Mid Florida Football and Cheerleading program.

Wolverines Athletic Director James Hogan has been with the program since 2004. Players and cheerleaders come from three areas of Winter Haven and from the Northeast community. There are approximately 160 children in the cheer and football program. There are five football levels in the program coordinated by Mr. Hogan. The Winter Haven Recreation Dept. provides the facility for the Wolverines and is in the process of planning a newe facility for the Wolverines program. Having a dedicated facility will elevate the program within the community and the football and cheer conference. James noted that the city has been very supportive of the children and the program. The park being planned with have two practice fields, a playing field and a play area and other areas as it will be a park for everyone.

Mr. Hogan has seen a change in youth football over the last 10 years. The "Heads Up" program with USA Football has been great for the kids teaching them how to play the game. If we see a problem or possible injury the player comes off the field and is evaluated. Players are far more likely to remain out of the game now than they would have been 10 or even 3 to 5 years ago. The same goes with hydration. "Water Breaks" are expected now vs 10+ yrs ago. Referees are trained to spot players, and call a timeout, if they see a need water.

The Wolverines had two teams make the playoffs. As to 2017 it is a wait and see. Sometimes teams are peaking age wise with a younger group the following year. More than anything Mr. Hogan wants the kids to have a safe and fun season.
