Animal Services Serves Up Events this Spring

Activities in Pasco County include a kitten shower and WoofStock 2016.

LAND O’ LAKES, FL – In an effort to continue its Save 90% Plan, Pasco County Animal Services Department will host several events during the spring to help keep their goal of saving at least 90 percent of the shelter pets that are brought to the department.

Unless otherwise noted, for information about these events, visit www.pascocountyfl.net/pas or call (813) 929-1212, (352) 521-5194 or (727) 834-3216.

Kitten Shower

Late spring is the time when young cats’ fancies turn to the birds and bees. Unfortunately, this means an influx of kittens to the shelter. To gear up for kitten season, which runs from late spring to early autumn, PCAS will host a kitten shower for all Pasco County residents.

The shower will take place on Wednesday, April 20 at 6 p.m. in the conference room of Building B at PCAS, 19640 Dogpatch Lane in Land O’ Lakes.

Female cats can get pregnant as young as 5 months old and will continue to come back in heat every 14 to 21 days until they’ve bred. Many times, residents bring in seemingly abandoned litters when the female has left them to hunt for food. When un-weaned kittens are brought into the shelter, they must be taken care of by foster homes to increase their chance of survival.

As part of the kitten shower, residents can learn information about becoming a foster parent of a newborn kitten and fill out an application. PCAS will provide cake for their shower, and have the following items on their “registry” for residents to bring to the party:

  • Kitten bottles and brushes
  • Kitten formula and kitten milk replacer
  • Heating pads (ones that are not auto shut-off)
  • Clean, disinfected, lightly-used kitten carriers
  • Blankets, towels and sheets
  • Canned kitten food

Barn Cats Available

Due to a recent hoarding case in the area, PCAS is housing many feral and semi-feral cats. Because of the nature of the case, these cats are not eligible for the Trap-Neuter-Release program.

However, these cats are now up for adoption as barn cats. Barn cats primarily live outdoors on agricultural properties, around outbuildings or farm fields, and decrease issues caused by pests. These cats have been spayed/neutered, vaccinated and microchipped.

Adoption fees have been waived for all barn cats. For more information, e-mail adoptionpartners@pascocountyfl.net.

Low-Cost Vaccinations

In an effort to protect family pets, PCAS is offering $5 rabies vaccines and $15 microchips at their 19640 Dogpatch Lane shelter on Saturday, April 30 from noon to 4 p.m. or until they are out of vaccines and microchips.

Dr. William Smith, the shelter’s dedicated veterinarian, will administer the vaccines and microchips to the first 300 pets. Pet owners who purchase the low-cost rabies vaccines will be required to obtain a Pasco County dog license for $10 for an altered pet or $35 for an unaltered pet.

WoofStock 2016

Friends of the Pasco County Animal Services, Inc., will host its second annual WoofStock celebration on Saturday, May 14 at the Florida Estate Winery, 25241 S.R. 52 in Land O’ Lakes from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m.

This family-friendly event helps raise money for a medical fund which aids sick and injured dogs and cats that come to the shelter. Tickets are $5 at the door and children 10 and younger are free. Pets are also welcome.

WoofStock 2016 will feature live bands, vendors and wine-tasting. In addition, Dr. William Smith will administer $5 rabies vaccines and $15 microchips.

Local vendors or food trucks interested in participating in WoofStock 2016, e-mail Andrea Ciesluk at aciesluk@pascocountyfl.net or go to www.FPCAS.org to fill out an application.
