National Donut Day: Where To Get Your Freebie

TAMPA BAY, FL -- Tampa Bay area residents with a taste for something sweet can cash in on a freebie courtesy of Friday's National Donut Day.

With many locations in the area, Dunkin' Donuts is on board with the tasty holiday.

They say that they'll hand out one free doughnut of your choice "while supplies last" with the purchase of a beverage. Find your nearest store using their restaurant locator.

Krispy Kreme is also taking part in the fun on June 3. That chain is offering one free doughnut, no purchase required, to guests who come in on Friday. To find its closest locations in the Tampa Bay area, visit the Krispy Kreme website.

The holiday itself, always celebrated on the first Friday of June, was established in 1938 by the Chicago Salvation Army to honor women who served doughnuts to soldiers during World War I. The women, known as the "Doughnut Lassies," are also sometimes credited with popularizing doughnuts in America, Krispy Kreme noted on its website.

To make sure the Salvation Army benefits from the day, participating Krispy Kreme locations will have the nonprofit organization's signature red kettles stationed at registers.

The Salvation Army this year is teaming up with baking company Entenmann's to help celebrate National Donut Day; Entenmann's will donate proceeds from sales and offer customers a chance to win free doughnuts for a year, by entering a contest on its Facebook page. Entenmann's doughnuts can be found at area grocery stores.
