Men Baking Secret Family Recipes Could Raise Thousands
Sen. Wilton Simpson is the baker to beat this year at the fundraiser for Habitat for Humanity of East and Central Pasco.
Women build, men bake—right?
Well, why not?
Habitat for Humanity of East & Central Pasco County put a sweet spin on its Women Build project a few years ago when it created the men’s baking contest and auction, according to Stephanie Black, director of development and public relations.

“Habitat for Humanity of East & Central Pasco County's Women Build isn't about excluding men, it's about including women in the construction of Habitat homes along with hard-working, low-income families,” Black said.
The Women Build—Men Bake event March 23 in Land O' Lakes puts the men in the kitchen, then on the catwalk.

“Prominent men and local celebrities bake items at their homes, some from secret family recipes and some might be out of a Duncan Hines box,” Black said.
The participants will wear hot pink aprons and walk down a runway with their creations to the tune of Shania Twain’s “Man, I feel Like a Woman,” according to Black. “Then the gentlemen will have the opportunity to tell everyone why they should buy their wonderful creation.”
In the past, some cakes have been auctioned for more than $1,000.
“This is a very lively, spirited, and fun event for a great cause,” Black said.
Sen. Wilton Simpson, the reining Habitat Man of the Year, is the one to beat in the auction, Black said.
The event also features a separate baking contest.
“Contestants bring their items in and this year they will be judged by Paula O'Neil, Ph.D., Clerk of the Circuit Court and Charlene Ierna, Ierna's Heating & Cooling, among others,” Black said.
Winners from the baking contest will receive trophies, ribbons, or donated prizes. These creations will be served for dessert at the event, Balck said.
Organizers are still collecting items for silent auction and prizes. There also are still baker spots available; contact the Habitat office sblack@habitatpasco.org or (352) 567-1444 for more information.
The event will include a special dinner prepared by Chef Alan Burke, libations and a complimentary photo booth provided by Wesley Chapel Photography, Black said.
Advance tickets are available for $100 each. No tickets will be sold at the door. Purchase online at www.habitatpasco.org or call (352) 567-1444.
All proceeds benefit Habitat for Humanity of East & Central Pasco County.
