Pasco Sheriff's Office Warns of Text Message Scam

The Pasco Sheriff's Office is trying to get the word out about a scam many residents are reporting. The following was posted on the sheriff's office Facebook page:

Recently, the Pasco Sheriff's Office has received numerous calls from citizens advising of fraudulent text messages targeting financial information.

The text messages claim to be from your financial institution wanting to verify your account. When you call the number in the text message (888-655-8888), it goes to an automated system asking you to verify your personal information and enter your credit card number, PIN, and 3 digit security code on the back of the card.

Financial predators can make text messages and phone calls appear from any number they want. It is important to remember that your financial institution will never ask for your PIN or contact you via text message and request account information.

If you receive a similar text message or a phone call from someone claiming to be with your bank asking for personal information, do not respond. You can go to your local branch or contact your financial institution at the phone number on the back of your card or on their website to verify if there is fraudulent activity on your account.
