Saint Leo Claims Sunshine State Conference Title

The championship earned the Lions the automatic qualifier to the NCAA Division II postseason tournament.

SAINT LEO, FL – For the third time since 2013, the Saint Leo softball team will advance to postseason play.

The Lions (37-13) finished the season with a series win over Rollins College, earning the team the outright Sunshine State Conference title. With three weeks to play, the Lions were tied atop the standings with the University of Tampa, but were defeated by the Spartans.

However, Tampa only won two of their remaining six games against Eckerd College and Florida Southern. With their 17-7 record, the Lions claimed the conference title and the automatic qualifier to the NCAA Division II tournament.

This is the second year in a row the 14th-ranked Lions will appear in the postseason. In 2016, the team was eliminated by the eventual national champion, North Alabama.

Saint Leo will host a selection show viewing party on Monday, May 8. The selection show will begin at 10 a.m. The event will take place in the lobby of Student Community Center at University Campus, 33701 State Road 52.
