Hurricane Danny Downgrades But New Storm Brewing

Only remnants remain of the once Category 3 hurricane, but another storm is hot on its heels.

The season’s first hurricane had more bark than bite it seems. The once Category 3 storm has now been downgraded to “remnant” status as it continues west.

The remnants of Danny had maximum sustained winds around 30 mph as of late Monday morning, according to the National Hurricane Center. The storm is currently located near Guadeloupe and is moving west around 12 mph.

While Danny fades away, another storm is drawing attention.

Tropical disturbance No. 1 was located about 1,250 miles east of the southern Lesser Antilles as of 8 a.m. Monday. The storm is becoming more defined, forecasters say.

“If current trends continue, a tropical depression is likely to form later today or tonight while the low moves westward around 20 mph,” the hurricane center wrote in its 8 a.m. report.

Should the disturbance continue to develop into a tropical storm, it would earn the name Erika. Forecasters say the low pressure system has a 90 percent chance of forming in the next 48 hours.

Meanwhile, a second disturbance is located near the Cape Verde Islands. This storm has a 10 percent chance of further development in the next 5 days as of Monday morning.

While all eyes are on the tropics, Tampa Bay area residents may want to turn their attention closer to home. Forecasters say the Bay area is in for a few steamy days ahead with highs in the low 90s and relatively low chances for late morning and afternoon storms on Monday and Tuesday. Rain chances rise as the week continues.
