Fewest Coronavirus Deaths In Florida Since August

The number of confirmed coronavirus cases in Florida increased by 1,838 on Monday as health officials reported 22 new coronavirus deaths.

TALLAHASSEE, FL — The number of confirmed coronavirus cases in Florida increased by 1,838 on Monday as health officials reported 22 new coronavirus deaths, the lowest increase since Aug. 30.

Eleven of Florida's 67 counties reported new deaths as of Monday. Those counties are Broward, Miami-Dade, Duval, Hillsborough, Jackson, Marion, Monroe, Palm Beach, Pinellas, Polk and St. Lucie.

The daily total compares to 38 new deaths Sunday, 61 new deaths Saturday, 100 new deaths Friday, 151 new deaths Thursday (state health officials reported 149), 128 new deaths Wednesday (health officials reported 127), 187 new deaths Tuesday and 68 new deaths last Monday.

The total number of positive cases of the coronavirus in Florida rose to 648,269 on Monday, up from 646,431 a day earlier.

That compares to 739,446 cases and 13,732 deaths in California; 658,311 cases and 13,657 deaths in Texas as well as 440,021 cases and 32,987 deaths in New York, according to information compiled by Johns Hopkins.

Florida health officials reported the state's 26th day of daily positivity under 10 percent. The daily positivity rate is calculated by taking the number of people who test PCR-or antigen-positive for the first time divided by all the people tested that day, excluding people who have previously tested positive.

Florida's overall positivity rate, which is cumulative, was at 13.48 percent as of Monday based on 4,808,756 total tests.

Hillsborough County, which includes Tampa, reported 38,545 cases of the virus and 562 deaths while Orange County, which includes Orlando, reported 37,152 cases and 387 deaths.

Sarasota County, which includes the city of Sarasota, reported 7,434cases of the virus and 216 deaths. Manatee County, which includes Bradenton, reported 10,673 cases and 266 deaths. Pinellas County reported 20,474 cases of the virus and 673 deaths while Pasco County reported 8,338 cases and 183 deaths. Polk County, which includes Lakeland, reported 17,863 cases of the virus and 469 deaths.

The total number of deaths in Florida climbed to 11,871 Monday up from 11,849 a day earlier. Florida's most recent one-day record of 276 reported deaths was set on Aug. 11. Health officials reported another 152 deaths involving non-Florida residents who died in Florida.

The state reported 40,083 hospitalizations on Monday, up from 40,024 a day earlier. That represents an increase of 59 new hospitalizations over the previous day, one of the lowest increases in weeks.

State health officials also reported a total of 3,160 current hospitalizations with a primary diagnosis of COVID-19, down slightly from 3,164 current hospitalizations a day earlier.
