MIAMI-DADE COUNTY, FL — Police said 23 were shot, including two who died, in a mass shooting outside a Miami-Dade banquet hall over Memorial Day weekend.

Three armed people got out of a white Nissan Pathfinder outside El Mula banquet hall in northwest Miami-Dade and opened fire on the crowd outside, according to investigators.

Officials released surveillance video Monday showing what they called a "vehicle of interest" in the shooting in the 7600 block of Northwest 186th Street.

Three people dressed in black emerged from the Pathfinder carrying guns and in seconds returned to make a getaway in the surveillance video, time-stamped 10:05 p.m. on Saturday, May 29.

Police asked for help identifying the people and the vehicle.

"We have intelligence information that this resulted from an ongoing rivalry from two different groups," Major Jorge Aguiar of the Miami-Dade Police Department's Homicide Bureau said at a news conference Monday about the shooting. "Our intended target was most likely in front of the establishment."

The shooting initiated by those in the Pathfinder sparked more gunfire, police said.

"Several groups that were in the parking lot also armed themselves and opened fire towards the initial shooters," Aguiar said, leaving what he called a "very extensive crime scene."

As of Monday, Aguiar said three people are "clinging to life" as a result of the shooting.

Crime Stoppers of Miami-Dade and The Keys has issued an alert naming Quinton Valbrun as the person killed in the mass shooting. Crime Stoppers said six others are seriously wounded.

Police have not released the names of any other shooting victims, but a crowd gathered outside the entrance of Ryder Trauma Center at Jackson Memorial Hospital told reporters they had family members who are among the victims.

Angelica Green of Miramar told reporters that her 24-year-old son and nephew were both shot. They had just arrived at the event and were not yet inside the hall when three men in "hoodies and ski masks" started shooting. She said her nephew was shot four times but is in stable condition. Her son was shot once in the abdomen and underwent surgery at the trauma center.

Chad Harris told WSVN-7 that his 19-year-old daughter was also shot.

Clayton Dillard was outside the trauma center, still awaiting word on the condition of a family member, according to the Miami Herald.

Investigators say they are still piecing together who was involved, and police were at the crime scene for almost 24 hours.

State, local and federal officials convened at a news conference Monday in a show of unity as they work to solve the case.

"These gun-violence-driven murderers ... are targeting individuals, and at the same time hitting innocent people that have nothing to do with their beef, ruining families, harming mothers, who are here today," Miami-Dade Police Director Alfredo "Freddy" Ramirez III said Monday.

Interrupting him, a man walked up to the microphone, stared at the crowd and said: "You all killed my kid," directing his comments to his child's killers, stating: "You must burn."

Police escorted the man away from the podium, and Ramirez continued: "That is the pain that affects our community right there, right before you. That's why together — all of us — we must work harder to bring justice to these families who are crying, as you hear right now. Know that the Miami-Dade Police Department will not stop. We will bring justice."

Anyone with information is asked to contact the Miami-Dade Police Department. People can file tips anonymously through Crime Stoppers of Miami-Dade and the Florida Keys by calling 305-471-8477 or by submitting tips online.

"This is the day that we should be with our loved ones, we should be remembering those who are lost, who have served our country and instead, here we are standing once again for a terrible tragedy," Mayor Daniella Levine Cava said at a news conference Monday morning in Miami-Dade. "To all of the families who are directly affected: Our hearts go out, our prayers are with you on this terrible, terrible Memorial Day."

More than $100,000 in reward money is available for information in the shooting:

  • Businessman and TV personality Marcus Lemonis, star of CNBC's "The Profit," offered a $100,000 reward to help authorities capture the suspects.
  • The ATF Miami and Crime Stoppers of Miami-Dade and the Florida Keys offered up to $30,000 in reward money as well.
