MIAMI, FL — The Miami Marlins home opener against the Baltimore Orioles and the New York Yankees game against the Philadelphia Phillies in Philadelphia have been postponed, according to Major League Baseball.

"Tonight’s scheduled games between the Miami Marlins and the Baltimore Orioles at Marlins Park and the Philadelphia Phillies and the New York Yankees at Citizens Bank Park have been postponed while Major League Baseball conducts additional COVID-19 testing," a statement from Major League Baseball said.

ESPN reported Monday the Marlins had a total of 13 players and coaches who tested positive for the coronavirus in recent days after the first player tested positive 72 hours ago. The network initially said there were 14 cases but later revised the number.

"The members of the Marlins traveling party are self-quarantining in place while awaiting the outcome of those results," Major League Baseball said. "Major League Baseball has been coordinating with the Major League Baseball Players Association; the Marlins; the Orioles; the Marlins' weekend opponent, the Phillies; and club medical staffs, and will continue to provide updates."

The Marlins were in first place of the National League East Monday after a 2-1 start against the Philadelphia Phillies in Philadelphia over the weekend. The Atlanta Braves were also ranked first in the National League East with a 2-1 record.

"Postponing tonight's home opener was the correct decision to ensure we take a collective pause and try to properly grasp the totality of this situation," Marlins CEO and former Yankee great Derek Jeter said.

Jeter said Marlins players and staff have undergone another round of testing and will remain in Philadelphia pending the results of those tests sometime on Monday.

The team was scheduled to return to Miami for a home opener against the Baltimore Orioles at 7:05 p.m. Monday in Marlins Park.

"The health of our players and staff has been and will continue to be our primary focus as we navigate through these unchartered waters," Jeter added.

The 1-2 Phillies were scheduled to play the New York Yankees on Monday at 7:05 p.m. in Philadelphia. The Phillies were ranked third in the National League East.

The 2-1 Yankees were ranked first in the American League East along with the 2-1 Orioles and 2-1 Tampa Bay Rays.
