New Tolls Take Effect Around Miami-Dade; Official Says Enough

MIAMI, FL — Optional new tolls went into effect Tuesday in Miami-Dade County and a member of the Miami-Dade Commission is saying enough already.
Miami-Dade Commissioner Esteban L. Bovo, Jr. said the optional new toll lanes pose an additional burden on Miami-Dade commuters.
They went into effect along State Road 826 in both directions between West Flagler Street and NW 154th Street, and along I-75 from the Palmetto to NW 170th Street.

"At the moment, Florida Department of Transportation officials have said there is no cap on the tolls, and the price will change depending on traffic flow," Bovo said of the optional tolls. "However, drivers will pay a minimum of 50 cents per segment."
Bovo said Miami-Dade commuters are spending too much time behind the wheel.

“Residents continue to face massive gridlock as their quality of life continues to diminish due to long hours on our expressways.” Bovo said. “Miami-Dade’s workforce is the backbone of our community. Anything that hinders their ability to contribute to our vibrant economy must be reevaluated."
Bovo called on state officials to reconsider.
"This new implementation of tolls will create an additional burden for Miami-Dade taxpayers, as they’ll be forced to pay more in tolls," he added. "I encourage state officials and legislators to revisit this measure and the burdens it places on our daily commuters.”
