"The victim enters his home with an acquaintance who is later determined to be one of the robbers," Rodriguez explained. "Once inside, the subject opens the front door for the other two attackers."

The 43-year-old Perez and his son were both charged with armed home invasion robbery. In addition, the elder Perez was charged with carrying a concealed weapon and the younger Perez was charged with possession of cannabis.

Rodriguez said that the money and medication were in a safe that the thieves carried out of the apartment.

Arrest documents said that the younger Perez told the victim that he had to step outside, which is when he allegedly let his father and the accomplice into the apartment.

"Inside, the victim is beaten. They attempt to handcuff him. When unsuccessful, they wrap a leather belt around his neck in an attempt to strangle him," Rodriguez added.

Police said they recovered the safe in the Perez home. It was not clear if the money and medication were still inside.

Police said that Perez and his son confessed to the crime.
