'Revered' Miami Beach Detective Remembered By Fellow Officers

Detective Larry E. Marrero​ served the Miami Beach Police Department in a variety of roles, winning praise throughout his 28-year career.

MIAMI BEACH, FL — A veteran Miami Beach detective who was "revered" by peers and supervisors, suffered an undisclosed medical emergency Wednesday at police headquarters and later passed away, according to a spokesperson for the Miami Beach Police Department. Detective Larry E. Marrero, served in a variety of roles, winning praise throughout his 28-year career.

Marrero was taken to Mount Sinai Medical Center as fellow officers hoped for the best outside. He was taken there around 11 a.m. The announcement of his passing came shortly before 1 p.m.

"Detective Marrero, a decorated officer, was currently serving as a background investigator, but he had previously served with distinction in a variety of assignments, including patrol, marine patrol, and as a school resource officer, an auto theft investigator and a homicide detective," explained the department's Ernesto Rodriguez.

Detective Larry E. Marrero was a 28-year veteran of the Miami Beach Police Department

First responders continued to arrive at the hospital even after the officer's passing as a Miami Beach fire truck unfurled an American flag to honor Marrero. First responders also fired water canons in tribute as Marrero's body passed over the Julia Tuttle Causeway.

"Larry was also a proud 20-year member of the department’s elite S.W.A.T. Team," according to Rodriguez. Detective Marrero was a consummate professional who always excelled in his assignments."

Rodriguez added that the detective was "revered" as a leader among peers and supervisors alike.

"Larry will be truly missed," he said. "The Miami Beach Police Department asks for prayers for his immediate and extended family as we begin to cope with this tragic loss of a dear friend and colleague."

Information on funeral services was not immediately available.
