Miami Beach Wins Award For Three Innovative Street Projects

Miami Beach has won an award for three innovative street projects that grew out of the city’s response to the COVID-19 pandemic.

“This award recognizes the city’s commitment to prioritizing pedestrians and bicyclists and advancing the city’s strategic vision of becoming less car-centric,” Miami Beach Interim City Manager Raul Aguila said.

The Complete Streets Community Award was presented at the 2021 Safe Streets Summit held virtually on Jan. 28-29. The event is sponsored jointly by the Miami-Dade Transportation Planning Organization, the Broward Metropolitan Planning Organization and the Palm Beach Transportation Planning Agency.

Miami Beach was recognized for a series of projects undertaken by the Miami Beach Transportation and Mobility Department in collaboration with business and neighborhood associations, stakeholders and other city departments.

The first-of-their-kind projects in Miami-Dade County include the first parking-protected bike lanes along Washington Avenue, the first open/slow streets in the Flamingo Park neighborhood as well as enhancements to Ocean Drive that reimagined the iconic entertainment strip with only pedestrian and bicycle traffic. The Ocean Drive and Washington Avenue projects also included additional parklets.

“Our transportation experts developed these programs to help residents and visitors who want to explore the many amenities Miami Beach has to offer on foot or via bicycle,” Aguila added. “Every car that stays parked creates less of an impact on the environment and reduces congestion on our streets.”
