Miami Weather: Gordon Brings High Winds and Flooding Concerns

A flood watch was in effect until Monday night for Miami-Dade, Broward and Collier counties.

MIAMI, FL — Weather forecasters were calling for strong winds and rainfall amounts between a half and three-quarters of an inch with possible flooding as Gordon lashes South Florida with tropical storm force winds and heavy rains. Miami-Dade school officials were watching the weather closely but did not anticipate that operations would be affected on Tuesday except in certain areas that experience flooding.

"Localized flooding may impact the ride to school tomorrow," said Schools Superintendent Alberto M. Carvalho on Monday.

Florida Power and Light reported that 2,973 customers were without power in Miami-Dade County as of 1:30 Monday afternoon. Another 627 were without power in Broward and 252 in Palm Beach.

In addition, a flood advisory was also in effect until 3 p.m. for central Miami-Dade County. Weather officials predicted minor flooding for Homestead, Coral Gables, South Miami, Homestead Miami Speedway and Black Point. Weather forecasters predicted additional rainfall of one to two inches in the afternoon hours.

Miami International Airport maintained normal operations during Monday's weather but officials reported some flight delays.

Labor Day

Showers and possibly a thunderstorm. High near 84. Windy, with a southeast wind 20 to 22 mph, with gusts as high as 31 mph. Chance of precipitation is 90 percent. New rainfall amounts between a half and three quarters of an inch possible.

Monday Night
Showers likely and possibly a thunderstorm before 11 p.m, then a chance of showers and thunderstorms after 11 p.m. Mostly cloudy, with a low around 79. Breezy, with a southeast wind 13 to 17 mph, with gusts as high as 24 mph. Chance of precipitation is 60 percent. New rainfall amounts between a quarter and half of an inch possible.

Tuesday
A 50 percent chance of showers and thunderstorms. Partly sunny, with a high near 89. Heat index values as high as 100. East wind 11 to 15 mph, with gusts as high as 21 mph. New rainfall amounts between a tenth and quarter of an inch, except higher amounts possible in thunderstorms.

Tuesday Night
A 40 percent chance of showers and thunderstorms. Partly cloudy, with a low around 79. East wind around 10 mph.
