Model-Turned-Professional-Fighter Wins Weekend Match

Miami's Avril Mathie Knocks Out Opponent in First Round

It was a “knockout night” for Miami’s Avril Mathie who won her second boxing match as a pro on Saturday night in Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic. Mathie, originally from Australia, threw a straight right punch 58 seconds into the first round, knocking out Mirma Elizabeth de la Hoz in the 118 pound class.

Model/athlete Mathie is known to many of her 96k followers on Instagram as Miss Hawaiian Tropic Australia 2012 and Miss Swimsuit USA International 2013. In her home country she’s often referred to as ‘Australia’s most successful pageant model ever.’ But this natural beauty and fitness expert officially became a professional fighter in December 2017 winning her pro debut bout.

But the sport of boxing is not new to Mathie. She started in 2012 and had her first amateur fight within 6 months. Five years later, Mathie’s total number of amateur fights were up to 20 in both Australia and around the USA. She won a number of state titles in Australia and eventually moved to Miami to further her career as both a boxer and model. Mathie now trains at the World Famous 5th Street Boxing Gym (home to Muhammad Ali) and has competed in two of the largest amateur tournaments in the world; the USA Golden Gloves and the Ringside Boxing World Championships.
