Special Spring Breakers Experience Miami Beach Sand And Surf

Dozens of special spring breakers from Nicklaus Children's Hospital were treated to a day along Miami Beach on Tuesday.

MIA MI BEACH, FL — Dozens of special spring breakers from Nicklaus Children’s Hospital were treated to a day along Miami Beach on Tuesday with a little help from Miami Beach Fire Department and Ocean Rescue. The ventilator-dependent children require tracheostomy ventilators, C-Pap, BiPap or oxygen to support their breathing. They and their families enjoyed a stress-free day as part of the Dr. Moises Simpser Ventilation Assisted Children’s Center Camp.

The annual visit to the beach is one of several special activities that create opportunities for recreation and socialization for children who have medical limitations.

Miami Beach Fire Department set up wheelchair paths for the children.

A special “waterproof” wheelchair allowed the children to go into the water while hand-held ventilators allowed the children to breathe comfortably.

The camp is the nation’s first week-long camp for ventilation-assisted children and their families. The event has hosted more than 250 families in its 31 years, some of whom have traveled from 27 states and three countries.
