Numerous Cancellations Reported At Miami International

MIAMI, FL — If you think it's cold in South Florida you should try flying to New York, Philadelphia, Washington or Boston. The operative word is "try," according to Miami International Airport officials who said that the snow, ice and general winter misery is wreaking havoc on flights to and from Miami.

"We actually have about 100 cancellations between arrivals and departures together related to the weather," explained Miami International's Karla Cobreiro. "We had about 15 delays for the same reason."

Despite experiencing the coldest temperatures at Miami International since 2015, none of the delays and cancellations have been brought on by our own unexpected winter experience.

Cobreiro said that the most of the problem areas are in the northeast.

"What we’re asking is passengers please be in contact with their airline," according to Cobreiro, who said that passengers might be able to avoid long waits at the airport if they find out ahead of time whether their flight will be delayed.

"They don’t necessarily have to come in, or if they could come in later because their flight was delayed that would be the best case scenario," she told Patch late Thursday afternoon. "We expect that to continue into tomorrow."

Cobreiro suggested that passengers also check Miami International's Twitter feet (@iflymia) and download MIA Airport Official from iTunes or the Google Play Store. Version 2 allows users to scan their boarding pass for the latest flight info and updates, navigate the airport with blue-dot technology and find the closest shopping and dining, including walk times, based on a customizable profile.
