2-Year-Old Ireland Nugent Walks for First Time Using Prosthetic Legs

Palm Harbor toddler Ireland Nugent, whose curly hair was adorned with a pink bow, smiled proudly as she walked for the first time, her hands holding onto railings for support.

Wearing an adorable pink dress fit for a princess and matching pink tennis shoes, 2-year-old amputee Ireland Nugent walked for the first time on Monday with the help of some new prosthetic legs, and lots of encouragement and cheers from family and friends.

The scene in Orlando Monday was much different than the tragic lawn mower accident that severed the spunky toddler's ankles in the driveway of her Palm Harbor home on the evening of April 10.

Ireland, her family and some close friends made the trip to Prosthetic & Orthotic Associates in Orlando (POA) where Ireland received her new prosthetic legs Monday afternoon. She was fitted for the legs last week.

The happy occasion was orchestrated by Steve Chamberland, an amputee and former pro-wrestler who founded the prosthetic charity 50 Legs.

Chamberland recorded Ireland taking her first steps using her new legs and shared the video with Patch (see video).

"It was great," texted Chamberland in a message to Patch.

The video and additional photos taken by POA were soon posted on the Ireland Nugent Family Support Page on Facebook, so Ireland's fans could see her progress.

"It was a great day. She did great," said Stephanie Kingston a POA employee.

Ireland's Facebook fans responded quickly with delight.

"AMAZING! She's ready to RUN!" wrote Vlw N Satw.

"GO Ireland!!!!," wrote Dru Fuller.

"What a natural. She Hit the ground running!!!!" said Candice Moors.

"How wonderful for Ireland and the family, truly wonderful..," wrote Patricia Shepherd Klein.

"My heart and soul rejoices. Cried tears of joy. I'm glad there was no pain," said William Carney.

Ireland received her new legs about a week after a large benefit was held for her at The Centre in Palm Harbor.
