Curlew and Keene Roads to Close for Horse-Drawn Procession Wednesday

A horse-drawn military caisson will carry fallen soldier Zack Shannon to his final resting place Wednesday.

Pinellas and Hillsborough County Sheriff's deputies will escort Army Spc. Shannon's remains from Curlew Hills Memory Gardens on Curlew Road to County Road 1 and then to the Dunedin Cemetery at 2400 Keene Road for burial. The procession begins at 11 a.m.

Supporters may pay their respects and stand along the roadside during the procession, but the funeral service will be private.

Officials are asking motorists to find alternate routes in the following areas Wednesday-

  • Between Curlew Road and County Road 1 (during the beginning of procession at 11 a.m.)
  • On County Road 1/Keene Road from Curlew Road to Virginia Avenue (during the procession)
  • The intersection at Virginia Avenue and Beltrees Street (during the procession and burial service, estimated time 11 a.m. to 1 p.m.)

Both northbound lanes of County Road 1 (at Virginia Avenue) will be shut down for motorcade parking during the soldier's private funeral service.

Shannon, 21, was one of five U.S. Army soldiers who died March 11 when their helicopter went down during a night vision operation in Afghanistan.
