Why do some refuse to recognize that we are in the middle of a human disaster?

Today the UK reimposes lockdowns because of overwhelming new Covid cases, even though they started vaccinations before the US.
Some call this fear mongering. Others call it fake news. Many people want to argue the statistics. To what end? Even if you don’t believe everything, inside there has to be a concern that something about this is real (worldwide). If wearing a mask could save only one person in Pinellas County, the hope is, everyone would rally around that.
There are over 3,000 counties in the US. One per County, that’s a lot of people who could be saved. Unfortunately, the bigger issue is the long term effects of the massive Covid hospitalizations as well as the unintended effect on those who need regular hospital care and will go without.
Why do some refuse to recognize that we are in the middle of a human disaster?
Is it fear? Is it selfishness? Is it vanity? Maybe independence, but none of that maters.
Masks do nothing to eliminate this virus. Washing hands does nothing to cure Covid. Socially distancing does not make this killer disappear. What these things do is buy Time. Time so every person on this Rock that wants a vaccine has a chance to get one before it’s too late.
