Man On Probation Accused Of Sexually Battering Child

PALM HARBOR, FL — Pinellas County Sheriff's detectives have arrested a Tampa man on charges of capital sexual battery on a child less than 12 years old.

Detectives began their investigation on Oct. 7 after a family member of the victim contacted law enforcement. The family member learned the victim had contact with Derek Hinton, 48, in Palm Harbor. Hinton lives in the 3400 block of East 11th Avenue in Tampa.

Detectives interviewed Hinton during a scheduled visit at the Florida Department of Corrections Probation and Parole Services at 634 Park St. in Clearwater and arrested him Monday on two counts of capital sexual battery on a child less than 12 years old.

Hinton was subsequently charged with violating the conditions of his Florida probation for arson and attempted murder and transported to the Pinellas County Jail.
