As automation replaced millions of manual jobs, the American middle class disappeared. Then to make matters worse, businesses chased profits and were forced to provide consumers with lower cost products, so they used overseas labor. At what cost do we really need high quality, low priced products? Maybe we should go back to the way things were. Many want to make America like it was before, but what does that look like? Are they willing to spend that money to make it that way?
All Congressional districts have been heavily impacted by 20th and 21st century automation and outsourcing. The people offering nationalistic sentiment and relief for those caught in the technological crossfire of the inevitable future, seem very attractive, but in the words of Benjamin Franklin, "well done is better than well said." In this regard, Americans need action towards the future.
We should start now to educate and train our youth for the challenges of the 21st century so they are not left behind, like so many in our current society. Are we as parents prepared to help our youth to learn the skills needed for the future? If we are constantly looking back, how can we help prepare the youth for the future?
