Palm Harbor Pet Rescue Seeks Help For Flooded Bahamas Shelter
The Humane Society of Grand Bahama took to Facebook Tuesday with a plea on behalf of its shelter in Freeport.
GRAND BAHAMA — The Suncoast Animal League in Palm Harbor is seeking help to rescue shelter workers and pets who are trapped in a flooded animal shelter in the Bahamas.
The league learned about the desperate situation after the Humane Society of Grand Bahama took to Facebook Tuesday with a plea on behalf of its shelter in Freeport.
"There are six people in the shelter on Coral Road that need immediate help as they are in neck-high water. We are calling all numbers but please share," wrote the society.

According to the Humane Society, there is already about five feet of water in the shelter, and the water levels are continuing to rise. Shelter workers have evacuated as many small dogs and puppies as possible but their access to the cattery has been cut off.
"We are doing all we can for the animals and the staff in the shelter," posted the Humane Society 11 hours ago. "We have been in contact with the U.S. Coast Guard and the emergency operations center, and they are both very aware of the need for rescue."

Unfortunately, said the Humane Society, they've had difficulty remaining in contact with the shelter as Hurricane Dorian continue pummeling the islands.
"We do not know yet if they have gotten to them or have even been able to. Sadly, we cannot give a status on the animals as we just don't know. We will share information when we have it."
The Suncoast Animal League said it is monitoring the situation.
"The Suncoast Animal League is currently in the process of gathering information, so we know how to best help them once Dorian has passed," said the league. "When we find out what they need and how to reach them, we will let all of you know."
