Pinellas County Adds Inclusive Equipment To Playgrounds

PINELLAS COUNTY, FL -- The Pinellas County Parks and Conservation Resources Department is making sure that all children feel included at county parks, no matter what their abilities are.

The department has added playground equipment to two parks that make play inclusive for children who may not have the same abilities as their peers. The new playgrounds are located at Boca Ciega Millennium Park, 12410 74th Ave. N., Seminole, and John Chesnut Sr. Park, 2200 East Lake Road, Palm Harbor). Penny for Pinellas sales tax funds paid for the equipment.

The playgrounds offer barrier-free interaction for children of all abilities from ages 2 to 12. They include fully accessible structures, a poured rubber surface for easier mobility and play pieces that provide varying degrees of difficulty and challenges. The features encourage group play and social interaction among all children.

Both sites were designated “National Demonstration Sites” by outdoor play manufacturer Playcore, which recognizes the inclusive playgrounds as model sites for other park agencies around the country.

The county will continue to upgrade playground equipment with inclusive features at county parks. Pinellas County parks are open daily from 7 a.m. to dusk.
