TS Andrea Causes Roof Collapse at Pinellas Humane Society

Late Thursday morning, the staff at the Humane Society of Pinellas heard a big bang and discovered Tropical Storm Andrea had caused the roof in one of the facility's buildings to collapse. More than 20 dogs were inside. None were hurt.

More than 20 dogs at the Humane Society of Pinellas have been moved to another part of the animal shelter after the roof collapsed when Tropical Storm Andrea was moving through the area late Thursday morning.

The staff heard a big bang around 11:30 a.m. then discovered the metal roof in one of the facility's buildings had collapsed. A large section of the roof was twisted and torn. The dogs were inside the building. None were hurt.

Staff closed the shelter on Thursday.

"Safety for our pets and people is our highest priority, so an inspector examined all the roofs for integrity. The section of kennels that sustained the most damage will remain closed, but the shelter will reopen for cat adoptions at 11 am today (Friday). Dog adoptions will open sometime this afternoon, following a minor repair," the Humane Society said in a news release Friday.

The Humane Society of Pinellas is located at 3040 State Road 590, which is just off McMullen Booth Road in Clearwater.
