Garbage Truck Accidentally Backed Over Man: Sheriff

TREASURE ISLAND, FL — A City of Treasure Island garbage truck driver accidentally backed over a man, killing him, Friday morning.

According to the Pinellas County Sheriff's Office, the crash occurred in the 8100 block of Bayshore Drive around 9 a.m. Deputies say Chester Tunsil, 38, was driving a garbage truck north on Bayshore when he realized he missed a home about three houses behind him.

Tunsil, an email from the sheriff's office said, put the truck in reverse and began backing toward the home he missed. As he was doing so, Justin Mastry, 44, was crossing the road in front of his home. Tusil, who told deputies he didn't see Mastry, backed over Mastry, the email said.

"Fire rescue paramedics responded to the scene and pronounced Mastry deceased," the email said.

The investigation remains active.
