Madeira Beach Public Works Department Moving to St. Pete

Madeira Beach city leaders are moving the public works department, including staff, to St. Petersburg.

Madeira Beach is moving it's public works department to a 6,000 square foot warehouse on 94th Street in St. Petersburg, according to the Tampa Bay Times.

The commission approved the lease Tuesday night. According to the Times, some residents are concerned the city may close down the city's sanitation service and outsource those jobs. Currently, there are 15 public works department jobs.
City Officials told the commission that they are not looking at contracting out sanitation jobs.
City Manager Shane Crawford said, "We have a lot of public works needs, and are treading water."

"This is not a long-term fix," Crawford added.
The department is moving out of the more than 50-year-old building near the marina. According to TBT, public works could move back to the island as early as 2016. That depends on the future of plans to build a boat storage facility.

If plans go forward, the new storage facility would have enough room to store nearly all of the public works department's equipment.
