New Sandwich Shop Opening on Main Street

The Sandwich on Main will serve gourmet sandwiches and sell beer and wine, according to owners Shawn and Mercedes Ofalt.

Add a gourmet sandwich shop to the growing list of new businesses opening in Safety Harbor's downtown district.

The Sandwich on Main is set to open at 308 Main Street sometime in the next few weeks, according to owners Shawn and Mercedes Ofalt.

Mercedes Ofalt said she and her husband realized there was a need for a sandwich shop in the area, so when an opportunity arose, they jumped at the chance.

"Shawn, my parents and I have noticed the need for a great sandwich shop downtown, and when 308 Main came available we knew it was our spot!" she told Patch via email.

She said they plan to offer a variety of classic and original sandwiches, many with a gourmet touch.

"We will have classic sandwiches, like the Reuben and grilled cheese, but they will have a slight gourmet touch, like homemade Cheddar bread for some of our specialties. There will also be unique spins on sandwiches we've always loved, like a Cuban and muffaletta."

Ofalt said the shop will be open daily from 11 a.m. until 8 p.m. and will have some speciality retail items, like beer and wine, as well.

The Ofalts are well known around town; Mercedes works at Embassy Real Estate Group a few doors down from the sandwich shop, while Shawn is a musician who can be spotted singing and playing guitar during 3rd Fridays and other events.

The couple said they plan on opening the shop around Memorial Day weekend or shortly thereafter, and they plan to use the upcoming 3rd Friday as a springboard to warm up for their grand opening.

"We are really excited and can't wait to be open," Shawn Ofalt wrote to Patch.
