Pet Walk and 5K Set for Labor Day Weekend in Safety Harbor

The Tail Waggin' Walk and 5K Race for the Hounds will take place Saturday, August 31st and benefit the Chamber of Commerce and the Humane Society of Pinellas.

Harborites, gather your kids, your pets and pull out your running shoes because there's a great event taking place at the Safety Harbor Marina on Labor Day weekend.

The Tail Waggin' Walk and 5K Race for the Hounds will combine a pet walk, a road race and a pub crawl into one fun, multifaceted event.

Hosted by the Safety Harbor Chamber of Commerce and the Humane Society of Pinellas, the inaugural event will take place on Saturday, August 31st from 4 p.m. - 9 p.m.

"The event will include a family pet walk along the water's edge at five o'clock, and then a 5K race from the marina and back starting at 8:00," Humane Society official Twila Cole told Patch.

"Then after the race, participants can head up Main Street to partake in the pub crawl beginning at 9:00 p.m."

The cost to register for the pet walk or the 5K is $25 before August 23rd and $30 afterwards. Participants will also be able to register at the event after 4:00 p.m.

There will be a $5.00 charge for the pub crawl, and participating establishments will also have specials and prizes for the crawlers.

Cole said the event, which will also feature food and merchandise vendors, was the brainchild of Chamber of Commerce officials who wanted to come up with a fun fundraiser that fits with the atmosphere of Safety Harbor.

They all hope the combination of an outdoor event, pets and pubs is a surefire path to success.

"It's our desire for this to become an annual event, ideally on Labor Day weekend," Cole said.

"There's a little bit of something for everyone, plus it benefits both organizations."

To register for the Tail Waggin' Walk or 5K Race, visit the Safety Harbor Chamber of Commerce website, or the chamber office, which is located at 200 Main Street in downtown Safety Harbor.
