Residents Urged To Prepare For Severe Weather

With the heavy storm activity associated with a cold front, emergency management personnel are urging residents to prepare.

TAMPA BAY, FL -- With the heavy rain and storm activity associated with a cold front, emergency management personnel are recommending that Tampa Bay residents remain prepared for additional severe weather today.

The front is expected to produce 3-4 inches of rainfall, which could cause flooding in low-lying areas. Residents should expect sustained windy conditions with the possibility of gusts up to 60 mph. The National Weather Service has also issued advisories for high surf, rip currents and coastal flooding.

During today’s severe weather, residents are reminded of the following tips to remain safe:

In the event of flooding:

· Those in traditionally flood-prone areas should locate vehicles to higher ground before roadways become flooded.

· Limit road travel. Road conditions and visibility may be poor due to severe weather. Do not attempt to drive down flooded roadways.

· Avoid coming into contact with or walking through flood water.

· Monitor weather radios frequently as weather conditions may change frequently.

In case of tornadoes:

· If a tornado warning is sent out, take action when orders are given.

· Look for an internal room with no windows on the lowest floor in the building. Many use a bathroom or a closet.

· If driving, park safely, get out and seek shelter. Cars are easily overturned. Do not try to outrun a tornado.
