Waterfront Park Opens With Water Balloon Blitz

Mayor Ayoub and Commissioner Merz were pelted with water balloons as part of the waterfront park's grand opening party.

The City of Safety Harbor hosted its 'Peel the Fence Back' party on Saturday to open the new waterfront park to the public, and there was plenty of fun to be had.

Well, it was more fun for some than others.

One of the opening ceremony activities had visitors pelting a pair of city officials with water balloons.

Mayor Joe Ayoub and Commissioner Cliff Merz were good enough sports to allow people of all ages to tee off on them with wet weapons of mass soaking.

"They were originally talking about getting me in a dunk tank, so I guess this wasn't so bad," a drenched Mayor Ayoub said after the onslaught.

Check out the video above for a taste of what they went through, and look for a full story on the park's grand opening Monday morning on Patch.
