PHOTOS: Sarasota Memorial Courtyard Tower To Open April 1

Sarasota Memorial Hospital's Courtyard Tower will open its lobby on April 1.

The first level of Sarasota Memorial Hospital's Courtyard Tower will open April 1, wrapping up the transition of bringing the hospital to the modern age.

The Courtyard Tower features 220 beds, and is part of a $250 million campus construction project that saw a new Central Energy Plant in 2009, and expansion of the Critical Care Center in 2011 with four integrated operating rooms.

The hospital gave a sneak peak on March 25 of what's inside the first floor. The tower itself cost $186 million and was built by Skanksa USA.

The lobby features a cafe, an Internet lounge to do work, private reception areas, a children's play area and the courtyard itself.

The remaining floors should open by Christmas, according to hospital officials.

The hospital opened in 1925 and the tower will replace buildings from the 1950s and '60s. The Northeast Tower was demolished as part of the improvements, too.
